Visit The One and Only Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe was one of Africa’s favourite safari destinations up until early in 2000 when Mugabe took control and sent his nation not only into a downward spiral but also killed off tourism. There are regular travel advisories against visiting Zim but keep in mind that zero tourists in the last 8 years of trouble in Zimbabwe have been affected. That being said, I personally wouldn’t travel throughout Zimbabwe but visiting the incredible Victoria Falls is certainly still viable. Still easy to get in and out from other African nations. British Airways, South African Airways, Nationwide, Air Zambia and Air Zimbabwe are a few of the choices and it’s only 1-1/2 hours from Johannesburg to Victoria Falls.

Victoria Falls is one of Africa’s major tourist attractions, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with the falls shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Each country has a national park to protect Victoria Falls and a town. Mosi-oa-Tunya The Smoke That Thunders National Park and the town of Livingstone in Zambia. The Zimbabwean side of the falls has always had more visitors than the Zambian side due to extensive visitor facilities. However, that’s changed since Mugabe took power and hotel occupancy in Zimbabwe now hovers around 30%, while the Zambian side has seen rates reach $630 U.S. per night. I vote for taking a chance on the Zimbabwe side since no tourist has ever been harmed and receive a welcome befit a king in Victoria Falls from the locals.

You can still cross between Zimbabwe and Zambia via the Victoria Falls Bridge and get a one-day visa on the spot for $20 U.S. Zimbabwe Visas are available at the port of entry and ranges between $30 U.S. for a single entry to $55 U.S. for multiple entries.
