Should You Use Hotel Websites, or Book Direct?

I am completely addictive (or anal…take your pick) when it comes to finding and booking a hotel at the best possible price or deal. Is one of the big hotel websites the way to go or should I navigate directly to the different hotels? …’tis a puzzlement… After trying both ways for years, still no definite conclusion. You probably expected a different answer but the best solution is still try both!

Case in point. Ibis Hotels is part of the Accor chain. Their brands consist of Sofitel, Pullman, Novotel, Mercure, Etap, Formule 1 and Motel 6! When I need a European hotel close to the airport for a one-night stay before flying out the next day, I want the cheapest deal. Not only the best price but also with complimentary transportation to and from the airport. Checked prices with several of the major search links first:

Hotels.com
Ā
Orbitz – Europe Activities

Before surfing over to:

Choice HotelsĀ® can be found at over 5,000 locations open and under development around the world.

Best Western – Save Now on Hotel Rooms Worldwide!

Definitely visit the individual hotel sites. It may take more time but if money is a consideration, you’re better off. The Ibis Hotel near Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris had a special of 49 Euros a night, internet only, payable in advance and, SUCH A DEAL! 49 Euros is almost like staying for free if you are an American.
The generic search sites don’t show:

- If the hotel in running a special promotion. For example, stay three nights, pay for two;

- If it’s worth while staying on the “Club Floor” or “Concierge Floor” that usually include breakfast, cocktail hours, snacks throughout the day at no extra charge;

- If there are special rates – AARP, Auto Club, Senior, Military, etc.; and

- If there are other benefits. Occasionally, a free massage and/or additional discounts.

Bookmark this page to save time and money on future hotel bookings. A few of the other big chains:

Starwood Hotels. Their brands: Four Points, Sheraton, W, Le Meridian, St. Regis, Luxury Collection, and Aloft;

Hyatt – Earn bonus points, miles & free nights;

Hilton Hotels;

…and, two big luxury chains…

- Four Seasons

- Ritz Carlton

TIP: Do not call the hotels direct. Most of the really great deals are Internet only. Many other hotel chains to check but I’d be sitting here for years inserting links. Look for your favorites on line if it’s not above. Travels With Sheila’s go-to sites for hotel rooms is: Booking.com (below) and Priority Club (Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express).
