Austria is easy to get to from anywhere in the world. Austria has clean drinking water and good food. Austria has thousands of kilometers/miles to hike and ski. Austria is the home of The Sound of Music. Why haven’t you visited yet?
Start off by surfing over to the following sites:
- For general information, Official Austria;
- Skiing, Ski Austria; and
- Hiking, Wanderdoerfer.
That’s all you need to get started. Your problem will be picking one, two or three areas to visit. V-E-R-Y…difficult to make a choice…
My recommendations for cultural, sportive, or just plain, good fun among all the places we’ve visited is:
Vienna and Salzburg is no surprise to you, Mayrhofen, Kitzbuhel,St. Johann di Tirol, Bregenzerwald, the area around The Wilder Kaiser, Innsbruck, the 11 villages in the Montafon Valley, and Zell Am See. If that doesn’t get you started, nothing will.

How to get around? Train! It’s a snap traveling around Austria and Europe by train. No worries about getting lost, where to park the car, buy gas/petrol (if you think it’s expensive in the U.S. wait until you see and convert the Euros there! OBB is the official Austria Railway. Look at the on-line information, book through them or purchase tickets while visiting. For Americans, I recommend using Rail Europe because it will cost more using the Euro in Austria than booking here in dollars. Also, if you plan on using a Rail Pass, Passes can only be purchased in your home country.
Basic Information?
- Americans just need a passport. Consult the Austrian Embassy or Consulate in other countries for Visa information;
- Money. Austria is part of the European community and uses the Euro. Use ATM’s found everywhere; and
- Eat whatever you’d like and drink the tap water with the exception of signs stating the water is “non-potable”.

Now, wasn’t that easy?

Innsbruck has to be the best mix of mountain tradition and history / culture in Austria. I am biased living here but it has great connections, a wonderful old town and skiing everywhere.
