Today’s e-mails included one from the Bregenzerwald Tourist Bureau, Austria that I just had to pass on. ex-Marine (husband, Steve) and I spent over two weeks hiking in the gorgeous Bregenzerwald area, basing ourselves in Au, Austria. There are a gazillion opportunities to bicycle around Lake Constance, day hike, attend concerts, sightsee or do nothing. And you ain’t seen nothing yet folks, until you visit Lindau. F-A-N-T-A-S-T-I-C.
Bregenzerwald Tourismus offers a four-day package hiking without luggage along the Bregenzerache River through the Bregenzerwald region. Your luggage gets transported from one hotel to the other while all you wear is a backpack..The Bregenzerache River rises above the village of Schrocken and flows into Lake Constance after 80 kilometers/48 miles.

- Day 1: Your four-day hiking excursion begins with arrival in Bregenz
- Day 2: Hike Sulzberg-Andelsbuch, approximately 6 hours walking time
- Day 3: Andelsbuch-Au (loved Au and you could just base yourself in Au and day hike the entire area), approximately 5-1/2 hours walking time
- Day 4: Return after breakfast to your first hotel or to the Dornbirn or Bregenz station.
What’s included? Three nights in a 3*** or 4**** hotel, half board (breakfast and dinner), luggage transport from hotel to hotel, transfers, hiking maps and route description, and the Bregenzerwald Guest Card. This card entitles you to free bus rides on all public busses and cablecars as often as you want. We optimized ours to the hilt and you can read about our Au experience on Travels With Sheila.

Just looking for a day hike? Bregenzerwald Tourimus suggests “Eduard Morike rambling path” in Schwarzenberg. The famous poet, Eduard Morike (1804-1875) spent a summer holiday in Schwarzenberg and the municipality built this trail in honor of his 200th birthday. The path has signposts along the route with poetic remembrance boards (probably in German).

The entire Bregenzerwald area can comfortably be visited from May into November so don’t procrastinate. Contract the tourist bureau for more information, make reservations and fall in love with this area just like we did.
