Hiking Around The Bohinj Area, Slovenia

Today would have been a beautiful hike with a start on a Plateau where there is skiing in the Winter, through forests and small towns BUT the weather deteriorated as the forecasters predicted and it was foggy and rainy the entire day. The good part – we actually managed to find our way to the Hotel Bohinj**** without any problem! (Something had to go right today!)

Hotel Bohinj was one of our favorite places. The best hotel food of the trip including excellent desserts (I am a major, finicky, picky, dessert hog), and wonderful people. They let me use their Internet and were just downright nice!

We set off in the rain (again) to hike the next day, got totally lost in the forest, came back and just vegged out. The following day started out sunny so we decided to hike UP Mt. Vogel and take the cable car DOWN.

The sky was clear but two hours into the hike, we started crossing snow on the path which continued the entire way up. (It had rained in the valley but snowed at this elevation – about 5,000′.) And then 10 minutes from the top, it started to snow on us. Swell!! Ran to the cable car and just made the next down one. The cable cars run every half hour.

Lake Bohinj, Slovenia

There are many other activites to do around Bohinj when the weather is good…or not…

– Tourist boats ply the lake every 30 minutes during the day.

– You can get a 3, 5 or 7-day fishing license. Spanning, fly-fishing and natural bait fishing is allowed on the Lake. Fly-fishing on the river Sava only.

– There are 13 marked bridle paths. Mrcina Ranch is a horse-riding center in Studor, with horses suitable for beginners, families, and experts.

– How about kayaking, canyoning, climbing, hydrospeed, paragliding, not to mention all the kilometers of marked hiking paths?

I would come back and spend a week in Bohinj trying some of these activities. We met Marinka Hodnik back at the Golf Hotel in Bled and she rents out rooms and apartments in Srednja vas, a 15-minute walk from the Lake. If you are considering an apartment stay in this area, contact Marinka at marinka.hodnik@siol.net or Bohinj website to see her listing. We walked right by her place on the way to Bohinj and it looked beautiful.

Tomorrow we were heading to the Istrian Peninsula, and staying in Piran. It’s supposed to be warmer there….but we’ll see…
