Happy Thanksgiving

Today is my favorite holiday of the year – Thanksgiving. A time to be grateful for family, friends and Good Health. My time to stuff a scrumptious turkey, concoct fattening appetizers and serve even more fattening desserts to the family. At least that would be the usual routine but today… Thanksgiving, 2007 is a little more exotic. ex-Marine and I will be on the “Orlova” in Antarctica celebrating his 68th Birthday. (I hope we’re celebrating, and not spending time in the stateroom toilet…sick from the extremely rough Drake crossing.)
Thanksgiving this year also happens to be Josh’s (grandson) 16th Birthday. Have a great Birthday, Josh. Get that driver’s license and be careful on the road…

In the midst of all the bounty, we’ll be taking a moment to say a special prayer and remember all those not as fortunate. The billions of people scattered around the earth who are lucky to earn 50 cents to $1.00 a day…whose stomachs are distended from malnutrition…and work from sunrise to sunset like proverbial dogs. The many victims and families of war and crime. And after having the good fortune to spend time with the Mountain Gorillas of Rwanda, a wish that these gentle, endangered animals will survive through our grandchildren’s lifetime and into their children’s lifetime.

Also, big thanks to everyone we’ve met during our travels around the globe who may not have had a lot of money but always had smiles on their faces and patiently went out of their way to welcome two foreigners in their midst.
A most Happy Thanksgiving to all my readers and fellow-travelers. Eat yourselves into a food coma and enjoy the holiday.
