Slovenia has one of the best-marked biking networks that we have ever seen. During our two weeks, we saw Mountain Bikers, casual riders with upright handle bars, pelatons of racers (especially on weekends), and riders with dogs in their straw baskets…just taking their time, enjoying the day.
Walking to Bled from Rudovna, we passed by a large sign detailing a cycle route in that area, and the various stages of it. It seemed as if there was no limit to the amount of biking a person could do.
Kranjska Gora has over 150 km’s of marked cycling trails, and there is a cycling tour through all three countries. For a truly compulsive athlete, think of joining the Race to Vrsic on the first Saturday in September. This race attracts more than 1,000 cyclists who race up the steep slopes that lead to the top of the mountain pass. Sound like fun?
Lake Bohinj has 15 marked mountain biking trails. Hiking up from Zavrsnica to Valvasorjev Dom (at the bottom of Mt. Stok), we came across a mountain bike race starting. They were going to bike UP 5km. to the same area we were hiking. It took us 1:45 minutes to hike to Valvasorjev Dom and they were still riding up. View image

“Ex-Marine” traded his T-shirt for a Zavrsnica 2006 Finisher’s T-shirt with one of the race organizers. If you ever visit Slovenia and see a Plano, TX Basketball Championship T-Shirt, it came from us! The organizer said her son would love a souvenir from America. And “ex-Marine” is proudly wearing his Zavrsnica T-shirt!

The Slovenian Tourist Office has a 163-page FREE book that describes all the routes and options to bicycle, drive or hike. There are theme routes such as the Kobarid History Trail which has preserved Military defense lines from World War I or ride an off-road bicycle trail in Bovec – take the gondola up and speed on down.
Helia is extremely experienced in arranging any kind of bike tour you’d like. Saso is a die-hard biker and will know exactly how to assist you. You can rent whatever equipment you need, and Helia will take care of transporting your luggage from place to place; book you into wonderful 3***/4**** Hotels, Hostels or Pensions; easy, flat roads – or killer days biking up mountains – with a group – or independently, just name it and Saso will arrange it exactly to your specs.
Motorcyclists and bikers were always whizzing everywhere around us with good reason. This country is made for bike riding. I’m tempted to see if I can still ride a bike without killing myself next time…and there will be another visit to this wonderful country!
